Booms

Absorbent Booms & Cushions

Booms are the heavy end of containment: larger in diameter and longer than a sock, built to ring a spill on open water or across a yard. Cushions do the opposite job, sitting in a bund, a tray or a low spot and soaking up liquid that has already pooled, where a flat pad simply floats on top of it.

Boom or sock?
Socks are typically around 8cm across and suit indoor containment around drains, doorways and machinery. Booms are larger in diameter and longer, built for open water and for spills across a yard where a sock would simply be overwhelmed.
Can booms be used on water?
Oil-only booms are designed for it. They float, repel water and pick up oil from the surface, which is what you want on a lagoon, an interceptor or a watercourse. Universal booms absorb water as well, so they sink once saturated and are the wrong choice on open water.
What are cushions for?
Liquid that has already collected: in the bottom of a bund, in a drip tray, in a low spot on the floor. A cushion has the depth to take a volume of pooled liquid, where a pad only works on a film across a surface.
