If you store petrol, solvents or anything else highly flammable indoors, you need a fire-resisting steel cabinet — not a plastic COSHH cupboard. It is the single most common mistake we see, and it is the one that matters, because a polyethylene cupboard offers no fire protection at all. Our steel cabinets carry 30 minute fire resistance and meet HSG51 and DSEAR. Our bunded cupboards are the right answer for oils, cleaning chemicals and COSHH-controlled substances, where containing a leak is the job rather than resisting a fire.

Can I store petrol in a plastic COSHH cupboard?
No. Petrol is extremely flammable, and indoor storage calls for a fire-resisting cabinet. A polyethylene bunded cupboard is built to contain a leak, not to resist a fire — in a fire it fails and releases what is inside it. For petrol, solvents and similar, use a welded steel cabinet with a fire-resistance rating. If a supplier offers you a plastic cupboard for petrol, something has gone wrong.
What sump capacity do I need?
The usual rule is that the bund holds at least 110% of the largest single container stored in it. A 25 litre jerry can therefore needs at least 27.5 litres of containment. Where several containers are stored, some sites work to 25% of the total volume instead, whichever is greater — check what your own policy or insurer requires before you buy.
What does HSG51 cover?
HSG51 is the HSE guidance on the storage of flammable liquids in containers. It covers how much may be kept in a workroom, what it should be kept in, and how the store should be sited and ventilated. Our steel cabinets are built to comply with it, alongside DSEAR, which is the regulation that requires you to control the risk in the first place.
